July,

In the Master's Hand

Years ago I had a friend named Danny Brown. Danny was a great fan of Chet Atkins, the famous guitar picker from the Grand Ole Opry and later head of RCA Records. Danny had learned to play like Chet and he was a master at it. If fact, Danny had a very classy Gretch "Super Chet" Guitar. And I am here to say, he was great.

Most of us guitar picker "want to be's" would listen to Danny play and think, if not say, if I had a guitar like that then I could play more like Chet myself. And so we could blame our poor picking on the quality of the guitar and not ourselves.

One day Danny was over at our house. Now, my little brother, Rusty, had gotten a little card board toy guitar for Christmas. Danny walked over and picked it up to give a look see. Pickers do that, they just can't help it. Well I said, "Don't waste your time. That thing is a piece of junk!" He held it for a moment and then began to tune it up. In a couple of minutes he strummed the strings with his pick and lo and behold it sounded pretty good. And then he started to play "Sweet Georgia Brown". It was incredible.

That was when I realized; it is not so much the instrument as it is who is playing it. In the hands of a real master even a toy can make beautiful music. The same is true in our walk with the Lord. It is not so much about us as it is who we can be when we are in the Master's hand!

I just can't wait!

Message from Associate Pastor Brandon

July,

In Esther 4:16 Esther says to Mordecai "Go, assemble all the Jews who are found in Susa, and fast for me; and do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my maidens also will fast in the same way. And thus I will go in to the King, which is not according to the law; and if I perish, I perish."

The background to this passage tells us that Esther had a tough choice to make. If she went before the King without being summoned, she was risking her life. If she failed to go before the King, all the Jews who lived in that region would die. She had to determine whether she would risk her life for the sake of the others. God had already been working in all of this to place her where she was (as the new Queen) to carry out His plan. The gospel confronts us all with a similar question. Jesus says "Whoever loses his life for my sake will find it and whoever seeks to keep his life will lose it." All of us will die a physical death on this earth. We start down that path the day we are born into this world. According to God's word; while we're on this earth, we have a choice between two kingdoms. We can live for our kingdom or we can live for a heavenly kingdom. God created all of us to live for a heavenly kingdom. If we live for our kingdom, every ounce of influence we ever have will die with us. If we live for a heavenly kingdom, the things we do have an eternal impact! The Kingdom in which you live will be the Kingdom in which you die. Is the Kingdom you're living for worth dying for?

For His Glory,

Pastor Brandon
